I noticed you use Paypal for handling donations. I'm probably way too paranoid, but I couldn't help but be reminded of these stories concerning indie devs and paypal. I just thought it should be known.

It's good for you to point this out to us. However, we've thought this through and have an iron-clad defense against something like this occurring to us.

You see, those other two devs had what we in the business call "a lot of money" in their accounts.

We, on the other hand, are flying real nap-of-the-earth and have "almost no money" in ours. It allows us to be more limber, more agile. When we're talking about moving low double-digit numbers around the international monetary system, we can be in and out like THAT. :)

No, in all seriousness, I do appreciate the heads up. To be honest, we sort of threw that in there last minute as we planned the re-launch teaser, mostly to see what would happen. We sort of lamented the fact that back in 2006 we didn't do something like this. We had hundreds of thousands of views across the 'nets, but we never thought to have them help sponsor it all, as we were focused on a big, monolithic release that required substantial backing to get done. So we said, "hey, let's try it" this time around.

If we get enough $$ to where this might be an issue, I think we'll gladly deal with it then :). Also, we're US based, have a clean company track record, etc. etc. etc. I have no idea what set them off in those cases, but hopefully we should be in the clear.

Have you considered a kickstarter? Those seem to be all the rage these days.

Yeah, considered it. Problem is twofold- one, it would put us in the public spotlight along with a lot of other unrelated projects. We're still in semi-stealth mode, and it would be ineffective seeing it up there at such an early stage.

Secondly, and more importantly, those projects are usually intimately tied to set milestones (we need X money to develop this featureset) and discrete donor packages (if you sponsor more than $45, we'll send you authentic developer saliva!) Both of those have the problem related to #1 above- they imply a fairly fleshed out, announced product with milestones that are very visible. We, on the other hand, have a lot of stuff in the works we're not quite ready to share yet, and it would be impossible at this early stage to say "this amount will guarantee this feature".

So, in short, it's a great and very useful idea, just not at this point and time for us.

(This isn't to say your $ won't go precisely to milestones and tangible production on our end if you donate, btw, just that we're not quite ready to break everything down so granularly yet).
