Im pretty sure its only modern day weapon fact but when a bullet misses and whizzez by you it makes a crackling sound. Its only in on game i know of, and if you're looking for weapon realism and accurately makeing them, you should check and see which weapons you need to add this to, the game that has it is called PRoject Reality, its a mod for BF2, Realism mod. Wondering if you were going to add this sound to some of the modern day weapons, im not exactly sure if the older ones such as WW2 had it but i know guns such as the M4, Mp5, some Aks, and M16s and such guns. You would have to research the weapons so you get the right ones with the sound.

All projectiles make a sound in flight. It's a side effect of passing through the atmosphere.

It's apparently different for supersonic bullets and subsonic bullets.

Really hoping they model this.

The effect is in ArmA, Flashpoint, Delta Farce, Infiltration for Unreal Tournament.

The cracking sound would not be present with every round. That crack is the sound of the bullet breaking the sound barrier, similar to a bullwhip being snapped. The sound barrier is about 1,200 FPS, faster than most pistol rounds.

I guess they'll give us subsonic ammunition (or projectiles at any rate) for any supressed weapon too?

I presume that a suppressed weapon will come with them by default, they will be available as an option(the source of the "crack" is the bullet, not the gun, so it cannot be easily traced back), or pretend all suppressor are like the MP5SD's. It has several ports in the barrel that bleed off some of the gasses, preventing the bullet from reaching the cutoff speed.

err the crack is only from supersonic NOT subsonic bullets. ive heard of it being more of a deafening snap though. just imagine it as the sonic boom that you would hear if an airplane, doing more then mach1, passed 100 feet over your head, cept this time its a bullet going 10 inches over your head.

What do subsonic bullets sound like?

I am imagining a sort of subdued hiss.

This video illustrates how sub and supersonic rounds sound through a can, as well as contrasting them with regular firing. Obviously the sound ain't quite the real thing but it gives you an idea.

I cannot for the life of me remember where I got this video but kudos to the creator.

Thats a good vid. What would be neat is if they placed a camera and a sound recorder down range below the target to pick up on the sound as the bullet flies overhead.

I think Ive seen that guy before...
