I was watching the gameplay trailer again today, and I saw the MG42 in the War Studio, and it got me thinking.

Even if there are just a few situations in the singleplayer, will there be heavy/medium machine gun emplacements (i.e. tripod mounts)?

The MG42 was particularly practical in all roles, anywhere from a tripod mount capable of accurate fire out to 1000 yards to being able to be fired on the shoulder of a friendly soldier (lol, goodbye hearing).

One thing that I'm exceptionally interested in is the possibility of plunging fire. If you've ever seen a programme on the History or Military channel comparing machine guns, there is always one that places in the top 5, if not top 3 - the Vickers gun. Most people don't discern it from contemporary machine guns like the Maxim. In fact, it's a modified Maxim action licensed by Vickers, instead of the action toggling downward, it toggles upward (much like a Luger P08), which saved space and made them smaller, lighter, and easier to produce.

The real innovation, though was the long range sights used for plunging fire. These sights allowed skilled machine gun crews to effectively use their guns as artillery - capable of accurate fire of ranges up to 4,500 yards. This a feat which is incapable of being matched by even the most advanced machine guns today - or even machine guns using heavier projectiles, like the .50 BMG. It's not surprising, then, that the Vickers gun served in the British military well into the 1970s.

Along with being accurate to an exceptional range, the Vickers gun was capable of firing as long as there was ammunition thanks to the water jacket around its barrel. During the First World War, it was expected that each gun would fire 10,000 rounds in an hour. This is not a cyclic rate of fire, rather it would actually put out this much lead in an hour. It was not rare for machine gun crews to fire for days at a time in preparation for large attacks. As long as ammunition and water were in supply, this was no problem.

What I'm getting at is that the ballistics engine of Alliance ought to be able to replicate not only plunging fire, but indirect fire, for heavy machine guns - allowing users to hit targets with accuracy and precision, beyond their range of sight.

Whew that would be some large scale shit. Like ARMA II or something lol. That would be badass to have fully functional heavy machine guns in the single player, hopefully if they are included our use of them is very open ended and can alter the flow of events...

I dunno how plunging fire would factor in to multiplayer however, unless of course some maps are indeed massive.

Hopefully light machine guns can be deployed on virtually anything with medium machine guns being a bit more restricted in use but being able to use a tripod. Should the German tripod used in WW2 be included (i forget its designation...) it would be great to have the option to use the keyboard to aim and fire the weapon because it was quite mechanical with those things. The term escapes me.. but you know what I mean

Well, there's no reason that plunging fire wouldn't work in theory, since once you shoot a round the Alliance ballistics model takes over regardless of your angle of fire. That said, unless you're really mass firing in such fashion I'm not sure I see the practical utility of doing so (especially if most of your team doesn't join in). The area of impact would be very, very large and the kinetic energy would be a fraction of what it normally is.

I think for game purposes a bipod will suffice for most light and medium Machineguns:

(this is me shooting, btw  )

This also leads to the question, will there be heavy machineguns, like browning .50 BMGs, on solid mounts? Such as defensive positions?

Probably not from the get-go, but they are absolutely planned and at least one has already been modeled.

Ah, what the hell. The Browning M2HB is already done. I'll add it to the confirmed weapons list.

HA! That might be a historical artifact: The world's first ever Tacti-Cool weapon! Add a picatinny-mounted flashlight and red dot laser and you'd be king. :D

Spiff, would that happen to be the M2 Hathcock used to score the longest distance kill in history until it was bested by the Canadian in Afghanistan?

I've read plenty about it but never actually seen it.

Yay another confirmed toy!

I'm assuming that it WON'T be man portable right? Are these (and other HMGs) going to appear only on fixed mounted positions?

A broken down tank with a working .50BMG would make a good location to fight over.

The .50BMG round has well over 13,00 ft-lbs of energy (says wikipedia), I sure hope this a "if you get hit you are jelly" weapon.

Yeah, heavy MG's will only be available in fixed positions. Which MG's qualify as heavy and which as medium will have to be a judgement call if they are roughly in-between.

Will likely depend on weight. Let's not forget we're also planning to include crew served weapons (think large mortars). How they will be implemented has yet to be determined, but envision something where a person (or two) carries the parts, and they then work in tandem to fire it once set up.

Mmmmmm, imma love this game :)

I'm baffled trying to figure out if this is a bot or not. His profile has nothing- not a single link -yet this post (his first) makes no sense.

Wagers?
